Chaos at Hong Kong International Airport are unprecedented and unexpected. For some days of the week all flights have been cancelled when the operations of the airport became suffocated in late afternoon. Entry points into boarding areas were also said to have been blocked by protesters, who claimed that travellers should understand and sacrifice a bit for the cause of the protest.

Translators and interpreters travelling in and out of the city for business could be caught in the conundrum of halted airport operations. As pointed out by Channel News Asia reporter Roland Lim, travellers can take a train to mainland cities such as Shenzhen or Zhuhai to travel out of the region. Another way is to catch a ferry via sea route or bus via HK-Zhuhai-Macau bridge to go to Macau. I would like to add that you have to make sure you have suitable travel documents and visa.

For fellow translators and interpreters taking up overseas assignments and need to show up on time to work in client’s office, do consider transit options in Singapore and Taipei. We rarely talk about politics when we are doing our work, but we definitely need to make sure our business trips always remain uninterrupted.
