Just two weeks ago I received an email from National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) notifying that my application for recertification has been approved. Which means my Certified Translator Certification (Chinese into English) is valid until November 2022. I feel happy for the recertification because I have put in some effort.
It actually is very difficult to regulate translation industry. And I think that NAATI Australia is among the best in terms of management. UK and US have their own certification system for professional translators. I did not try to get those because I think it is better to focus on Australian certification, since I have already had one.
Other than reaching certain word count for translation work each year, the recertification once every three years also requires translators to attend some courses. Among others, foreign language other than English and the original language that you always translate from; courses related to: translation and language; professional ethics; and new fields and genres of knowledge.
In recent years I have been taking up online courses to accumulate my credit points for recertification. Professional translators have to constantly improve in the profession; this is the reason why NAATI requires us to keep on learning.
