I have been working on Cantonese to English transcription projects this week. Some are my own transcription files, while some require me to proofread other transcriptionists’ work.

It seems like I am better at managing time code. It is quite okay if any future clients require me to submit SRT files. The only thing now is that I have to look for applications which show milliseconds. In other words, instead of h:mm:ss format, I prefer hh:mm:ss:ms format.

Milliseconds help separate sentence by sentence uttered by speakers. If you record only seconds in your SRT file, the subtitle of the video / audio clip usually goes through hiccups. The subtitle lines appear either faster or slower.

When I see slower or quicker subtitle lines shown on the clips in the market, it reminds me of the necessary work to record milliseconds when each sentence starts and ends.

A good SRT file should include up-to-par subtitling work, and the time stamp with accurate hh:mm:ss:ms format. Transcriptionists / translators who submit such a comprehensive SRT file for clients’ direct uploading of subtitles should earn higher rates.
