Subtitling is a type of work that attracts two extreme reactions. You are either enjoying or shunning it because you find it to be repetitive. Thankfully, when we work on it the correct way, arrangement of subtitles can be relaxing.

Firstly, make sure the video clips are edited nicely before writing the subtitles. Write the Chinese and English subtitles line by line. Take each line as the version to be uploaded as subtitles and do not exceed the number of limited characters for each line. Focus on the transcription and you will finish writing the lines fairly quickly.

Subsequently, upload the written lines onto your subtitling programme. I always prepare both .ass and .srt files so that clients can ask for either of them.

If video editing is still needed after uploading .srt file, hardcoding the subtitles onto the video is the best method. When the subtitles are hardcoded, the video editor can trim unwanted parts and no new subtitling is needed.

Subtitling work is minute and complicated. But I have a great sense of achievement when I see my subtitles are hardcoded onto videos. And that makes all my efforts worthwhile.
